And Who is My Neighbor
By Mary Rupeck, South Shore East Area Director
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked. “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” He replied. “How do you read it?” The man answered, “’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind" and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor…?” Luke 10:25-29
- Our neighbor is the young boy who thinks he must have done something wrong because his mom died and his dad walked out on him and his three siblings.
- Our neighbor is a brother and sister who are floundering among nine other kids in a foster home because her mother signed herself into rehab but she keeps ‘falling off the wagon’.
- Our neighbor is the girl who cut out of school for a month because she was afraid that if she did go, people would be able to see right through her and know that her father was sexually abusing her.
These are real children right here on Long Island…they are all in our mentoring program…being mentored by people like you. These Christian men and women saw a need right in their own communities. They made a choice to commit to being there for a child, to show them the love of Christ through their own example; through their own lives. Week after week, they give their time and energy to help bring the children into a place where they see the effect of living a life for Christ.
The first young boy is opening up to the Lord’s healing.the brother and sister have both accepted Christ and are beginning a walk with Him, and the last girl is older now and living her life for Christ completely healed from all the hurts from her Dad and is currently a mentor for L.I.Y.M.
This is all because someone decided to reach out to help a hurting child from his or her neighborhood. Do you know someone in your church who you think would be able to spend time with a hurting child? How about you? †
